Reading
as we all know improve knowledge, vocabulary, imagination, etc. A good reader can be a writer, illustrator, or an artist as reading triggers imagination among kids in early age itself.
Few Tips to Make Your Little Ones Read
Be a Reader Yourself
If you are a reader yourself, or they see you reading books, naturally kids get attracted to them.Well, mostly. If you are not, it is time to put on a show. It does not hurt to carry around a book and pretend reading for 15 minutes before sleeping or while having coffee.
Read Them Stories
I would not exactly say before bed, but make it a point that you read them stories at least every alternate days in a week.
Make a Library for Them
At first, they may not show interest, but buying books and having them arranged in a space can gradually lure kids to them. It would not happen overnight, but sooner or later your patience will be paid off. I am sure as I have seen it happen with both of my kids.
More Talk, Less TV or Phone or Games
Once they are given more time to watch TV, Phone, Games, there is no coming back. Encourage them to go and play outdoors. Try to talk about books, characters, new arrivals, authors whenever appropriate.
Take Kids to Bookshops
If your budget allows, take them to bookshops and allow them to choose their own books. For kids bookshops are a wonderland. Let them get a whiff of books in display. Even adults can't get enough of visiting a book shop and to be around with books. You know what I mean. Second-hand bookshops are a good option.
Join Kids Book Club in Your Locality
Reading with lots of interaction and activities kids will naturally incline towards reading. Allow to have their own book reading group in your house where their friends can come and sit around for reading out from books. Encourage them to tell stories to each other.
Take a Library Membership
That is something every kid takes pride in, to own a library membership card. Take them every now and then. Let them get lost among book shelves. I watch them at a distance and enjoy the excitement in their eyes as they browse for books and eagerness to get their hands on favourite books.
My kids had not seen me reading in their early childhood. I used to read three books in a row in a week’s time when I was young. So after my first child turned one, I started collecting lots of books, hoping one day she will start reading. Initially one would just flip through pages, see the images, try to read familiar words and before you know, they would be reading them. So, try it. Try to build a small library for them. It works.
